He wasn’t the prettiest or most sophisticated player, but few Americans can match Clint Dempsey’s outstanding career. He came from the playgrounds of a small Texas town, spent a couple of years at Furman University before turning pro and going on to play in Europe. His best years were at Fulham, and he had a lot to do with a smalltown club competing with the Man Us, Chelseas, and all the other giants of the Premiership. However, it was as a member of The United States National Team where his star shone the brightest. Who will ever forget his goal in the opening minutes of the U. S. victory over Ghana in our first game in the 2014 World Cup? It was one of many he scored while wearing his nation’s colors. Clint Dempsey was a “Junkyard Dog”, willing to sacrifice his body, play hurt, risk injury, whatever it took to find the back of the net. Arguably the BEST EVER to wear the red, white, and blue, he will not be easy to replace.
