I only met him once, nearly 40 years ago, at a coaches’ clinic in Annandale, Virginia, but you could tell RON NEWMAN was DIFFERENT! Different not just as a coach, although his career record, especially in the indoor game, was remarkable. Different in his approach: He didn’t take himself, or the sport, too seriously. After all, it is a GAME. Different in his demeanor: He was one of us. We were all fellow coaches, on the field together, to learn from, and enjoy, each other. Different in his motives: He wanted to contribute. He came to this country and laid down roots, made this country his home (unlike so many carpetbaggers, who simply followed the money trail, wherever it led). Ron Newman was special, a true American soccer pioneer. He made the game FUN. He will be missed.
